Manchester United caretaker boss Michael Carrick has issued a passionate plea to supporters ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
Heading into the encounter, the stakes could not be higher for United.
The Red Devils are currently on an unbeaten run of six games under Carrick. In that streak, United have picked up five wins. They only dropped points in the 1-1 draw with West Ham at the London Stadium.
United’s most recent result, the 1-0 victory over Everton, cemented their place within the guaranteed Champions League spots.
With top-four rivals Aston Villa suffering a shock defeat to relegation battlers Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday evening, three points at Palace’s expense would catapult Carrick and his players to third place in the Premier League table.
When Carrick was named interim head coach, United were 11 points behind Villa. That a win could put them ahead of Unai Emery’s side is a testament to the impact the legendary midfielder has had in such a short span of time.
Carrick spoke to MUTV and called on fans to create a hostile atmosphere at Old Trafford and help keep the team’s momentum alive.
The 44-year-old coach told club media, “[Let’s] keep that momentum, keep that atmosphere. I have to say the away fans again the other night were incredible, but to be back home and feel that love and support and energy [will be great].”
“Hopefully, everyone comes feeling good and makes a lot of noise.”
He added, “We have that connection because it’s been great to see over recent weeks. We’ve got to keep building on that and keep pushing. ”
“We’ve got big games coming up, this is as important as ever, so everyone’s got to be ready for it.”
United vs. Palace kicks off at 14:00 GMT.
