Manchester United have had to deal with some unwanted controversy in the past week, following some comments from minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe about immigration.
Ratcliffe claimed the UK has been “colonised by immigrants” in an interview with Sky, and following a lot of criticism, Manchester United issued a statement addressing the matter on social media.
Unsurprisingly, interim manager Michael Carrick was asked about the comments in his press conference ahead of United’s next match against Everton. He said: “I think Sir Jim has made a statement, external and the club has made a statement, external on the back of it.
“For me to add to that is not my place. Enough has been said in that regard. I have been around this club for many years, we make a huge impact globally and we are responsible for that.
“Throughout the years as a player, a member of staff, a supporter, we are really proud of the culture we have at the club, and equality and diversity and respect for each other is something we look to carry forward every day.”
United play Everton on Monday, and Carrick revealed that Mason Mount is getting closer to fitness, but Matthijs de Ligt remains ruled out.
Carrick said: “Mason is getting closer and we have been patient with him. We don’t want to push anything. We want him back and fit. He is getting closer, which is good for us.
“Mat [Matthijs de Ligt] is working towards it, but he is a bit behind Mason.”
United have been excellent in Carrick’s five games at the helm, winning four and drawing one.
