According to Sunderland Echo, Michael Chopra, the former Sunderland, Newcastle United and Cardiff City striker, has returned to playing at 42 by joining Cymru South side Trethomas Bluebirds.

The move ends a four-year absence from competitive football. He last featured for West Allotment Celtic in 2022.

Trethomas finished 13th in the Cymru South last season and are seeking to strengthen before the new campaign. The club view the addition as a major coup, adding top-level pedigree to Paul Evans’ squad.

Chopra came through at Newcastle United then represented several sides, but he is widely remembered for Cardiff City. He had four spells there and scored 63 goals, becoming a fans’ favourite in South Wales.

He first joined Cardiff from Newcastle in 2006, delivering 22 goals and 12 assists in his debut season, which led to a £5million move to Sunderland in 2007. He made 42 appearances for the Black Cats and scored eight goals.

Later stops included Ipswich Town, Blackpool, Kerala Blasters and Alloa Athletic, with stints in India and Scotland. His latest switch places him in a Trethomas side preparing for their third season at Cymru South level.
