Michael Chopra has made a surprise return to football at 42, joining second-tier Cymru South side Trethomas Bluebirds.

According to Sunderland Echo, he has been out of competitive action for four years, last featuring for West Allotment Celtic in 2022.

Chopra brings considerable experience to a team that finished 13th last season and are looking to strengthen before the new campaign.

Chopra came through at Newcastle United then had several spells elsewhere, though he is widely remembered at Cardiff City. He had four stints with the Bluebirds and scored 63 goals, becoming a popular figure in South Wales.

He first joined Cardiff from Newcastle in 2006 and made an immediate impact with 22 goals and 12 assists in his debut season. That earned a £five million move to Sunderland in 2007, where he made 42 appearances and scored eight.

Later stops included Ipswich Town, Blackpool, Kerala Blasters and Alloa Athletic, with further spells in India and Scotland. His latest switch comes as Trethomas prepare for their third season at this level.
