Liverpool are now working on a dream double deal.
Michael Edwards’ position has come under fire in recent days with the revelation that FSG’s plan to buy a second club has become ‘dormant.’
Edwards was brought in at Liverpool to oversee not only the Reds’ operations from a football perspective but also potentially another club’s under FSG’s umbrella.
This doesn’t seem likely to happen anymore and that could see Edwards’ focus return solely back on Liverpool.
That would be great news because the club’s former sporting director was excellent at his job. Edwards was always attentive and listened to his recruitment team. Because of his nous for spotting talent he was able to find some absolute gems who would turn out to be superstars during his first tenure.
It’s this that Liverpool could be returning to - especially if the latest report is to be believed.
And especially because Liverpool are embarking on one of the most difficult periods in the club's recent history.
Not only has the Reds' form slumped under Arne Slot but they are also approaching the end of an era.
Mo Salah has already announced his decision to leave the club. It will only be a matter of time until Virgil van Dijk will follow suit, given he only has one year left on his current deal come the summer.
How Liverpool replace the duo is going to determine the entire face of the club's future. Get it, right and the Reds will be flourishing, get it wrong and the Reds could be heading towards the same fate as Man United during the post Sir Alex Ferguson era.
So, it's imperative Liverpool get it right, and having Edwards now solely focused on recruitment could be a huge boost in the club's endeavours to get this decision right.
It looks like they are working on the perfect move, too.
According to a report on TEAMtalk also referencing two reports from Sky Germany, Liverpool are now lining up a double move for Yan Diomande and Castello Lukeba of RB Leipzig.
Now this is not unusual under Edwards' tenure. Liverpool do like shopping at Red Bull clubs and they also aren't afraid of buying players from the same club in the same window.
They did it with Southampton back in the summer of 2014, and they did it last season buying Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.
The report claims, this move could cost them £148m, which would be a whopping fee, but it's one that would be well worth it.
Diomande is pretty much the dream successor to Salah's throne. His dad is a Liverpool fan, he grew up idolising Anfield and he is the best young winger on the market right now.
He offers speed and one vs one ability, which is exactly what Liverpool need right now.
Lukeba on the other hand is the best young left-sided centre-back on the market as well. If anyone can replace Van Dijk, it could be him.
