While we’re loathe to give any backing to anything Rangers-hating Michael Stewart has to say, his comments about Dujon Sterling lately aren’t completely without fire.
The notorious pundit made a quip or two about the Ibrox utility man, that there may be some tension between he and manager Philippe Clement, and normally we’d just ignore such comments coming as they would be from a charlatan with a bias against our club.
But there’s no denying the former Chelsea man seems to have completely fallen out of favour with Clement, after being a complete favourite, and it’s even more confusing given he just signed a brand new contract extension barely weeks ago.
Now Ibrox Noise may have questioned why on earth the boy, signed till 2027 as it was, was given a rather unneeded extra year, with our only defence being that it further affirmed his value to the team and potentially increased his market value.
And yet infamously, and rightly, Sterling called out Rangers’ collapse last season and described the team as ‘sh*t’ in comments the manager completely condemned and criticised the player for saying.
Then following this curious new contract, he hasn’t started a single match, appearing only as a sub.
Clement’s comments about Sterling’s new deal and the player himself weren’t perhaps the most lavish of praise either:
“We are delighted that Dujon has committed his future to the club. He has become a vital member of the squad over the past year since I came to the club, showing his potential in several positions and always being ready for the team. We are going to continue working hard together with him to get everything out of his abilities and believe he will continue to have a big impact on the squad.”
Solid, but not exactly superlative.
Is there an issue between them?
In fairness he wouldn’t be the only player to have a gripe or two about this boss, with Jack Butland and Leon Balogun speaking out against ‘things’ in the press in recent times as well.
But it does feel like Sterling has been pushed out a bit.
Stewart claims a ‘power struggle’ – we think he’s making that bit up, but it is clear that since signing his contract, Sterling has not started a single match.
After being a Clement favourite and one who the manager swore by, now he’s on the fringes.
And we can’t say it’s obviously football-related given the results have actually gotten worse in his absence.
Very strange.
