With the Bundesliga allowing clubs to use five substitutes for the rest of the season, players like Mateu Morey who have yet to taste first-team action are more likely to get their chance than they otherwise would.
With Dortmund comfortably ahead 4-1 against Paderborn last weekend, Morey came in as an 87th-minute substitute and was able to raise plenty of eyebrows despite his short cameo.
Morey helped set up Dortmund’s fifth goal with a dazzling burst between a pair of Paderborn players and provided Jadon Sancho with the assist to complete both his hat-trick and the rout.
The 20-year-old right-back arrived with high expectations after signing a five-year deal from Barcelona over the summer and Michael Zorc certainly believes there’s more to come from the young man.
“Mateu’s appearance on Sunday was the well-deserved reward for his hard work. And even if it was only a short assignment and we already led when he was brought in, he still did his job well.
“He didn’t get nervous and put his ball skills to good use.”
Morey won the European U-17 Championships with Spain in 2017 and also helped Barcelona win the UEFA Youth League the following year.
