Michail Antonio has claimed Leicester City rejected a second chance to sign him after injury, saying the club did not want to risk a financial setback.
“When I found out I'd torn my calf the day before signing for Brentford, I laid in bed for two days,” Antonio told BBC Sport.
“First day, I was just crying. The second day, I just didn't want to get out of bed. I thought 'I'm back where I want to be, I'm back in the Premier League'. And then it happened again with Leicester.
“I was meant to return to Leicester but they didn't want me back in because they didn't want a relapse on their books. So I trained alone for a week and then went into Charlton."
The former West Ham forward trained with City under Marti Cifuentes through December and early January before a muscle injury saw the deal collapse. He returned to fitness in February and later joined Qatari side Al-Sailiya.
City were deducted six points this season for Profit and Sustainability Rules breaches and then made four late-window signings, none a striker. Patson Daka or Jordan Ayew will now lead the line, with five non-penalty Championship goals between them at one every 659 minutes.
