Michel Platini returns to Forez, hails Saint-Étienne’s warmth at charity golf | OneFootball

Michel Platini, one of Saint-Étienne’s last title-winning Verts, returned to the Forez this weekend for a charity golf tournament at the invitation of his former team-mate Christian Lopez. He praised the warmth of the region while revisiting his ASSE years.

According to Le Progres, around 50 former elite athletes were invited by Sylvana and Christian Lopez to the 19th Vert for ever event, which marked the 50th anniversary of the Verts’ European Cup adventure.

Wearing a green polo and a white glove on his left hand, Platini took one last look towards the green before lifting his iron and striking. He swapped the football for a golf ball for the weekend.

He said he had promised to come for the 50th, describing that Saint-Étienne side as his youth. The Verts made him dream, he loved that team and he remains close to its players.

The former France great, later a fallen European football chief, also spoke about the state of the game, including the Gianni Infantino case, and Zinedine Zidane’s arrival as France head coach. Platini was 20 when Jean-Michel Larqué’s group lost in the final.
