Middlesbrough are beginning to make their first transfer breakthroughs of the summer, as Rob Edwards looks to build a squad capable of returning to promotion contention next season.

Boro announced the signing of Hull City centre-back Alfie Jones last week, in a deal that has reportedly cost the Teessiders a total package worth £3m.

Edwards looks set to follow up his first signing as Middlesbrough head coach with another, as Boro are reportedly close to finalising a deal to sign Troyes midfielder Abdoulaye Kante.

In what has been a frustrating summer for Middlesbrough on the transfer front, there is now a renewed optimism that the club can and will strengthen sufficiently before the 1 September deadline.

But is there a player out there that could arrive at the Riverside Stadium who could really alter the trajectory of the football club, and hand them a major boost to their promotion credentials?

"Exactly what we need" - Middlesbrough urged to complete dream Pavel Sulc signing

We asked our Middlesbrough fan pundit, Liam Day: 'Name one player you'd absolutely love your club to sign between now and the 1 September transfer deadline and why?'

Liam said: "The player I'd aim to sign as my dream signing would be Pavel Sulc.

"We were linked with him earlier this summer, and he does seem like he'd fit Rob Edwards' system to a tee.

"He got 15 goals and nine assists in the Czech league; they are ridiculous stats no matter what league you're playing in, and with the way we've been playing in the pre-season friendlies, the number 10's are the most important players.

"Morgan Whittaker has been shining. He's been looking really good, and I'm excited to see how he gets on this season.

"Delano Burgzorg has been playing. He's been caught offside quite a bit, and whilst he does fit the system a bit, I feel like Pavel Sulc; if you put him there, he'd be an absolute dangerman in this league.

"He'd be a massive threat. Obviously he can score goals, but he also gets assists. It's exactly what we need. We need someone who can make the runs and is a threat constantly, and I feel like he'd offer that."

Sulc could be superb Swiss Army Knife player for Rob Edwards to add to his Middlesbrough squad

A report from The Mirror in early July detailed Middlesbrough's interest in Sulc. However, it doesn't appear to be a straightforward deal for Boro to complete.

That's because Premier League side Bournemouth are also said to be interested in the 24-year-old, as are Serie A giants Lazio, as well as interest in his services arriving from Turkey and Germany too.

Therefore, Boro appear to have some serious competition for his signature, but crucially for those clubs chasing a deal, the Czech international is in the final year of his contract, with Plzen said to be expecting a sale before the end of the window.

If Middlesbrough can move quickly and win his services - which is likely to cost them a significant transfer fee - then Edwards could have a player on his hands that is a cut above at Championship level, and one that could be perfect for his system.

Sulc can operate anywhere across the forward line, and so he could be utilised in a variety of ways from centre-forward, to central midfield, and could form a deadly goal and chance-creating partnership with Finn Azaz.

Or, Boro may see him as the ideal strike partner to Tommy Conway, allowing the likes of Azaz, McGree, Hackney and Morris to compete for playing time in midfield.

Regardless, Sulc looks to be a superbly talented player given his numbers in Czech football, and given the calibre of clubs interested in him, and would surely signal a serious coup should Middlesbrough strike a deal for him.
