Middlesbrough boss Kim Hellberg has confirmed Adilson Malanda was left out of the squad for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup victory over Doncaster Rovers due to being rested.

Malanda was not included in the matchday squad after being given a break from action.

“There were very few players that were rested really,” Hellberg said.

“You can talk about Malanda, who has played almost every second since we started right at the start of pre-season in Portugal.

“It was just a good way for him to breathe a little bit, he was the only one who probably needed that.”

Middlesbrough progressed to the third round thanks to goals from Kyle Joseph, Will Lankshear and Jeremy Sarmiento.
