Middlesbrough have completed the loan signing of Jeremy Sarmiento from Brighton, a deal that is set to become permanent. They are second in the Championship and pushing for promotion.

“This is a great opportunity for Jeremy and gives him the possibility of a permanent move if things go well, with a club challenging for promotion to the Premier League,” said Brighton sporting director Jason Ayto.

Sarmiento spent the first half of the season on loan at Cremonese, making seven substitute appearances. He has not played for Brighton since scoring in a 4-0 win over Crawley Town in the Carabao Cup in August 2024, Hurzeler’s third game. He can play as a No 10, but had little prospect of breaking into Hurzeler’s plans.

He helped Ipswich Town win promotion in 2023-24, then did the same with Burnley in 2024-25. The move offers a chance to complete a hat-trick of promotions, and if Middlesbrough go up he would stay to play in the Premier League.

Sarmiento scored three goals in 20 appearances for Ipswich in the second half of 2023-24, then four in 35 league games for Burnley in 2024-25. He also had a spell at West Bromwich Albion in the first part of 2023-24, scoring twice in 20 league outings.

His exit severs Brighton’s Ecuador links, after Moises Caicedo joined Chelsea in August 2023 and Pervis Estupinan moved to AC Milan last summer. All three were in Ecuador’s squad that reached the last 16 at the 2022 World Cup.
