Middlesbrough ‘join’ Rangers in race for Leicester’s Stephy Mavididi | OneFootball

Football League World reports that Middlesbrough have joined Rangers in the race to sign Leicester City winger Stephy Mavididi on the eve of the 2026/27 Championship season.

Boro, beaten by Hull City in May’s play-off final, have been busy this summer but still want attacking reinforcements and could try to gazump Rangers following Leicester’s drop to League One. Several Championship clubs are also understood to be tracking the former Arsenal and Juventus forward.

Hellberg’s side have registered interest in the 28-year-old as they look to bring him to the north-east. Last month it was reported that Rangers held positive talks with Leicester and it was claimed the Glasgow club were willing to offer up to £7 million, though whether a deal happens remains unclear.

Mavididi joined Leicester from Montpellier in 2023 for around £6.4 million and was influential in the promotion season, playing every league game with 12 goals and six assists. He then scored four times in the Premier League relegation campaign and three in 42 outings as City suffered another demotion to the third tier. He is currently preparing for a fourth season at the King Power Stadium.

Middlesbrough have made seven signings, including Jeremy Sarmiento for £3.2 million and striker Will Lankshear in a move that could reach a club-record £20 million. Goalkeeper Radek Vitek arrived from Manchester United for an initial £7 million, rising to £14 million, with Myles Peart-Harris, Kyle Joseph and USMNT pair Sebastian Berhalter and Max Arfsten also added. Further business is expected, with a renewed push for Spurs defender Ashley Phillips under consideration.
