Hayden Hackney's future at Middlesbrough is uncertain going into the January transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are leading Fulham in the race to sign Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough.
According to TEAMtalk, the three Premier League clubs are all eyeing a move for Boro's number seven ahead of the January transfer window, with Football League World excusively revealing earlier this week that the Cottagers had been watching the midfielder.
The 23-year-old’s future at the Riverside Stadium has been the subject of intense speculation throughout 2025.
Hackney almost made the switch to Championship rivals Ipswich Town last summer, with it being reported that a £20 million deal was agreed between the two clubs.
However, he ultimately opted to remain with Middlesbrough, where he has made a very promising start to the new season under Rob Edwards.
It has been reported that Fulham are currently behind both Man United and Spurs in their pursuit of Hackney.
And it is believed that Boro are hoping they can hold onto the midfielder beyond the January transfer window, with their sights set on fighting for promotion this year.
Fulham are understood to be behind, with suggestions made that they’ve missed their window of opportunity now that bigger clubs are ready to strike on their interest in the player.
Hackney has a contract with Middlesbrough until the summer of 2027, giving the club some leeway on any upcoming negotiations.
But the allure of a Premier League move could be quite tempting for the 23-year-old, who has come through the Teesside outfit’s academy system.
Boro have made a strong start to the new campaign, and currently sit top of the table after the opening eight fixtures.
Edwards’ side have earned 18 points from a possible 24 and are one of two remaining clubs that are unbeaten still in the second tier of English football, with Hackney proving key to that.
It’s really no surprise that Hackney is generating such Premier League interest, and in fact it’s more shocking that he didn’t go last summer.
The midfielder is ready to compete in the top flight, and a move to Spurs or Man United wouldn’t be beyond him at this point.
The 23-year-old is the exact kind of player both sides are missing from their midfield options at the moment, providing that link between defence and attack.
Middlesbrough should be doing what they can to wait until at least the summer before worrying about his future, as he could be crucial to Edwards’ side fighting for promotion this year.
