Middlesbrough appointed Rob Edwards as their newest manager over the summer after an underwhelming Championship campaign.

The ex-Luton Town boss will be keen to bolster his side before the new season gets underway, with the club targeting a promotion push.

The Teesside outfit have yet to confirm their first signing of the new summer, with the squad back for pre-season ahead of next month’s opening league fixture.

However, it could be the case that players will be sold before any major deals are agreed, with speculation surrounding a number of first team players.

Middlesbrough urged to keep Tommy Conway

When asked which one player the club cannot sell this summer, FLW’s Middlesbrough fan pundit named Tommy Conway.

While he accepts that Hayden Hackney, Finn Azaz and Rav van den Berg could all be heading for the exit, he feels Conway would be harder to replace than all of them, and thus must be kept.

“The player we can’t afford to sell, I’d say Tommy Conway,” Day told Football League World.

“Simply because he’s still young, he’s scored plenty of goals for us last season, I feel like he’s got a lot of room to grow.

“Finn Azaz is going to go, Hayden Hackney is probably going to go, Rav van den Berg seems off as well.

“I think they’re all somewhat replaceable, maybe not Finn Azaz, but Tommy Conway is the one I’d say we need to keep the most.

“He’s fast, his finishing is good, you give him chances he’ll score.

“Obviously, we’re rumoured with Danny Ings, I don’t like that at all.

“We need a better option, Tommy Conway is that option.

“I’d like to see a younger person come in alongside him, but I feel like Tommy Conway is very hard to replace.

“He’s got pace, he really does not stop running and he gives it all for the badge.

“He seems good in the dressing room as well, it just seems like he’d be nearly impossible to replace.”

Middlesbrough will begin their Championship campaign with a clash at home to Swansea City on 9 August.

Conway should be a key figure for Edwards’ Middlesbrough side

Conway had a positive first season at Middlesbrough, contributing 13 goals and one assist.

The forward is still only 22, and has shown he can score consistently at this level if given an opportunity.

Edwards will surely see him as a key figure in his plans this season, so a sale should not be on the cards.

Given the other potential exits, Boro cannot afford to keep offloading players that show this level of potential, or else they will never contend for promotion.
