Midfielder praises Corinthians Feminino’s impact, recalls club offer

Dayana Rodríguez's starting position at Corinthians was not something guaranteed when she arrived at Parque São Jorge at the beginning of the season. However, the Venezuelan quickly showed why she received a two-year contract with what she herself calls the "best team in Brazil", and highlighted the challenges faced throughout the year.

"Corinthians is the best team in Brazil, the fourth best in the world. So, there wasn't much to think about. But also many doubts arose about the squad, about the possibility of me being a starter or not, and if I would have opportunities, because here we always strive to be the best. I questioned a bit about this, I think it was the only uncertainty I had. After that, it was just about getting out of the comfort zone, facing the challenges that would come and, little by little, conquering my space here at Corinthians", she commented in an interview with Meu Timão.

At 23 years old, Day stood out for her excellent 2024 season with Grêmio, in which she played 24 games, scored six goals and gave two assists. Even with the renewal proposal from the club from Rio Grande do Sul, she chose to sign a pre-contract with Corinthians, a decision she describes as a personal and professional achievement.

"I was in the South, still with the Grêmio squad. We were going through difficulties because of the flood that happened. Then the proposal came up. The agency presented the offer from Corinthians, and I was very moved, because I never imagined that I would play here. It was a very special moment, as I always wanted to compete for titles in Brazil and be part of a strong squad to fight for the Brazilian Championship. I think the timing ended up fitting perfectly", she explained.

Even with strong competition in midfield, good performance and calls to the Venezuelan national team did not guarantee an immediate place in the starting lineup. Day Rodríguez gradually won her place during the Brazilian Championship, until she established herself in the semifinals and finals of the competition, being one of the protagonists in the conquest of the national heptachampionship.

So far, the player has played 29 matches for Corinthians, as well as four for Venezuela in the Copa América, with three goals and three assists. These numbers grew after the 11-0 rout over Always Ready, from Bolivia, in the group stage of the Conmebol Women's Libertadores, when she directly participated in three goals. With Yaya's departure to PSG, Day commented on her growth since she arrived at the club.

"It was not easy, because I worked a lot. Corinthians is a high-level team, which participates in many consecutive games, and you need to always be prepared for that. The squad is also large, with many players. I managed to stand out for having played in several matches and added many minutes on the field. Thank God, this has been one of the periods in which I played the most. I continue to evolve with each match and ready to continue contributing", Day celebrated.

Although she is known for her marking power, Day Rodríguez has shown a more offensive facet this season. In addition to scoring important goals, she stood out with beautiful goals against Ferroviária, for the Paulista Championship, and against São Paulo, for the Brasileirão, both with precise finishes in the corner. Against Always Ready, the shot that looked like a cross ended up stylishly in the back of the net.

"Last year I scored several important goals that were decisive mainly in the Brazilian Championship, in which I played in the previous team. This year, thank God, I also scored beautiful goals, even under the coverage of the goalkeepers. I have liked this a lot. Whenever my teammates guide me, I try to finish at my favorite spot. I make the most of every opportunity to shoot at goal and seek the goal", she concluded.

Day Rodríguez returns to the field this Wednesday, when Corinthians faces Santa Fe, from Colombia, at 8 pm, at Florencio Sola (Lencho) Stadium, for the third round of the Women's Libertadores group stage. A draw is enough to guarantee Timão in the quarterfinals of the competition.
