With the January transfer window less than a couple of months away, fans across the EFL are turning their attention to who their club may bring in this winter.

A couple of months ago, the transfer window for Rotherham United would have been an opportunity to bring in players prepared to help the club stave off relegation.

However, after a surge in form recently, Matt Hamshaw's Millers may have an eye on moving even further up the table and mounting a play-off charge, which seemed incredibly unlikely when looking at the club's pre-season expectations.

For that to be the case, Rotherham will need reinforcements to build on what they have, rather than letting players go. Given the Miller's persistent injury problems in the infancy of the campaign, their depth has been used to the fullest.

Despite this, Tom Eyre, FLW's Rotherham fan pundit, feels that Jack Holmes could still be on the loan block this January.

Eyre feels that there won't be many departures this winter unless Matt Hamshaw is forced to let one or two people go, but one player who should be looking to leave on loan is Jack Holmes.

Despite the amount of squad rotations Hamshaw has had to do so far this term, Holmes has made just two appearances in League One. At 24, Eyre feels that his time may be up at the ASSEAL New York Stadium.

"I think we have a very bare squad at the minute, so if Hamshaw gets his way, I don't think anyone will be sold or loaned out unless we bring in three or four new players," he said.

"Having said that, players who definitely need loans are Jack Holmes and potentially Hamish Douglas."

20-year-old Douglas has deputised along the backline for Rotherham recently, starting in each of their last two games, and scoring in the 2-2 draw against Burton Albion.

However, after not even being in the squad in 11 of the opening 13 games, Eyre feels that, once players are back fit again, it'll be tough to see Douglas keeping his place.

Therefore, the man who spent last season on loan at National League North side Warrington Town may be subject to a loan move to a side in League Two.

"Douglas has played well when called upon recently, but may not see much game time when we have our centre halves back fit again," he explained.

"So he might go somewhere to get some EFL football, but the main one is Jack Holmes, who has struggled to get game time under Matt Hamshaw or Steve Evans.

"I think he's running out of time as a Miller, unfortunately."

Rotherham United move probably a step too far for Jack Holmes

For Jack Holmes, a move last summer to a Rotherham side that had just come down from the Championship was a big one, as the winger had spent the past few seasons in the non-league circuit with Hereford, Halesowen and Stamford.

However, the 24-year-old hasn't been able to make an impact in the EFL. He started just three league games last season, and is yet to start from the off this term.

And despite getting regular minutes in EFL Trophy action and FA Cup games against lesser opposition, Holmes is yet to score for the Millers.

It's clear that the wideman has talent, but a move up to one of the bigger sides in the third tier may have been one that came too soon, and Holmes may need a move to a side lower down the pyramid to regain some form.

Matt Hamshaw has shown that he doesn't need the 24-year-old to lead his side to wins, so it's clear that he may be pretty expendable this January.
