Miedź Legnica became the first club to be relegated from the Ekstraklasa for the 2022/23 season on Monday evening. Their 1-1 draw at Cracovia was not enough to prolong their relegation battle.
Miedź entered the match knowing that anything other than victory would end their season-long stint in the top flight. Though a first senior goal for Dawid Drachal had given the Miedziowi a lead on the stroke of half-time, a second-half finish from former Ukraine international Yevhen Konoplyanka earned Cracovia a point and condemned Miedź to the drop.
Miedź had started the weekend 11 points from safety, but a 2-0 victory for Zagłębie Lubin at home to Widzew Łódź made their task Much more difficult. Given that Grzegorz Mokry’s side had failed to collect three points in their last eight outings, the odds were stacked against them. They now return to the second tier, where they had spent 9 of the previous ten seasons.
