Mika Biereth ended a long barren run as Monaco won 3-2 in Zabrze in Thursday’s Conference League play-off first leg. It was his first official goal since 5 February at Strasbourg in the Coupe de France.
Paris Brunner and Biereth started together in Poland and both scored. Nice-Matin highlights that his Monaco spell has swung from a blistering start to a lengthy drought.
He struck inside nine minutes, timing his run, holding off his marker and finishing after linking with Detourbet.
Beyond the goal, his impact was limited. In 81 minutes he had 16 touches, only one in the area, at least 20 fewer than any other Monaco starter.
His Monaco story has been whiplash, from 14 goals in 10 league games and harmony with Breel Embolo to a new deal to 2030, then the dry spell.
Head coach Filipe Luis said in early August he thinks Biereth is getting there, calling him dangerous, good in the box and a striker who needs volume of chances. He added he is giving him full support.
Mental coach Steve Savidan believes lost reference points and confidence can blunt a finisher’s instinct, and he dares to think Thursday brought the release required.
With Folarin Balogun’s probable departure before the window closes, more chances could follow. The understanding with recruit Matthis Abline, injured in Zabrze, will matter, the quicker forward appearing a good foil for Monaco’s No 14.
