Things can change very quickly in the world of football. Mike Tullberg, current U19s manager and expected to leave the club at the end of the season, is poised to take over the Black-and-Yellows U23s team starting from July. As reported by kicker, Tullberg could stay at Borussia Dortmund, as previous discussions indicated his departure from Signal Iduna Park.
As conversations with CEO Lars Ricken were to take place, the young coach's prospects allegedly changed with a new opportunity. According to sources, the possibility of being the first candidate for the first team in the event of a switch in the coaching position was a likely factor in Tullberg's apparent change of heart.
Mike Tullberg has been the U19s coach for a few years now, and a fascinating spell in the first team following Sahin's sacking gave hope to fans that Tullberg could have a future at the club. During his tenure as a first-team coach, the Dane drew against Bremen, beat Heidenheim away, and secured his first career Champions League win, defeating FC Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 at the Westfalenstadion.
I would personally enjoy seeing Tullberg make the full circle in BVB managerial rankings, and having a solid option in case of a sudden dismissal would be ideal to guarantee a smooth transition. At the same time, I believe it would be more beneficial to the Dane to make his breakthrough and prove himself on the pitch.
It sounds like the Edin Terzić effect happening all over again, as much as I would entertain the idea of Tullberg as the first team coach one day. However, as we learned with Nuri Sahin, it would be better to allow Mike to leave and develop his skills elsewhere, perhaps to return in the future.
