A potential Arsenal debut at Portman Road is in the waters

James Scanlon could be in contention for his Arsenal debut against Ipswich, after being called up to first-team training by Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal manager is expected to rotate for his side’s fourth game in nine days and third away fixture in succession across all competitions.

Among the players who could be rested ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash at Brighton are Bukayo Saka and Christos Tzolis - with the pair having featured in all six games so far this season.

While Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze would be likely to start out wide in this scenario, there may be space in the matchday squad for an attacking player alongside wonderkid Max Dowman.

Arteta has previously used the early rounds of the Carabao Cup to hand opportunities to younger players, handing a senior debut to Andre Harriman-Annous against Brighton last season, for example.

Scanlon, a summer arrival from Manchester United, might be next in line as he was spotted in Monday’s training session at the club’s London Colney base ahead of Tuesday night’s cup tie at Portman Road.

Marli Salmon, Dowman Jaden Dixon and Harriman-Annous were the other Arsenal youngsters involved, along with senior players such as Eberechi Eze, Bruno Guimaraes, Mikel Merino and Viktor Gyokeres.

Scanlon, capped 24 times at senior international level by Gibraltar, has already featured twice for Arsenal U21’s, scoring in both games against Chelsea and Brighton.

“I like to score goals, assist, so hopefully I can excite players who watch me,” he said upon joining the Gunners in the summer transfer window.
