Mikel Arteta has issued updates on Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino before Sunderland’s Premier League visit on Saturday. Saka is being assessed, while Merino is set for surgery after a foot injury.
Arsenal beat Chelsea on Tuesday, 4-2 on aggregate, to reach the Wembley final, but attention has quickly turned to fitness. According to Sunderland Echo, Saka felt an issue during the warm-up before the 4-0 win over Leeds United.
Arteta said the problem does not appear serious, though medical checks will continue. He noted Saka felt better today, and a call on his involvement for tomorrow or the weekend will be taken after further evaluation.
Merino sustained his injury against Manchester United and will undergo a procedure, which Arteta said is not always positive, calling it a major setback given his versatility. He added it is a rare issue, so recovery will be monitored after surgery and the healing process must be respected.
On deadline day, Arteta added that Arsenal were actively exploring cover, with four months to go and all competitions still to play for. If no suitable option emerges, they will keep what they have. He also noted the departure of Ethan Nwaneri to Marseille and said the Merino news was unexpected and for a long time.
Arsenal now pivot back to the league, with Sunderland next at the Emirates Stadium, the visitors aiming to extend an impressive campaign.
