Mikel Arteta's blend of emotion and detail has shaped Arsenal's rise, capped by a first Premier League title in 22 years. El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that his methods have finally been rewarded seven years after his Christmas 2019 appointment, with a Champions League final against PSG on 30 May in Budapest. They were mocked with 'Second again' during three straight runner-up finishes.
Back in 21-22 Arsenal lost their opening three games, Arteta's third campaign. Before facing Norwich he told players how, aged two, he underwent heart surgery, novel in Spain, and was warned to be careful with exertion. He still forged a long elite career.
He likened the medics who saved him to a football team, highlighting round-the-clock commitment driven by love of the job, and demanded the same purpose from his squad.
Symbolism followed. He planted a 150-year-old olive tree from 1886 to underline the club’s roots, unveiled a giant lightbulb to urge players to connect, and blasted You'll Never Walk Alone before Anfield.
He had the Emirates tunnel covering removed so both teams felt the crowd. North London Forever became the matchday anthem and motivational messages line London Colney.
His touchline gestures recall Pep Guardiola, as does the set-piece obsession shaped by assistant Nicolas Jover. A corners record was set on 1 March against Chelsea. Monday’s 1-0 over Burnley came from a corner finished by Havertz, the 19th of the season, and more than a third of 69 goals are from dead balls.
Raised at la Masia and a veteran of more than 150 Arsenal games, he was 37 at his unveiling after three seasons under Guardiola at Manchester City. The hierarchy kept faith and the black trophy silhouette he installed to inspire new signings will finally light up.
