Milan coach Allegri has proved all doubters wrong, except one | OneFootball

Milan have had a great start to the season under new coach Massimiliano Allegri and the Italian tactician seems to have proved all his doubters wrong, except one.

Milan are the Serie A leaders, level on 28 points with Napoli after Round 13.

The Rossoneri have only lost one game this season, on their 2025-26 Serie A debut against Cremonese at San Siro, but have been unbeaten in 13 games across all competitions.

Milan’s 2024-25 campaign had been beyond disappointing as the Rossoneri finished outside a European placement, only won the Supercoppa Italia and changed two coaches, Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceiçao.

Allegri has also had a fresh start at Milan, where he had already won a Serie A title in 2010-11. The Italian tactician had been criticised during his second spell at Juventus, because of poor results and a far too defensive playing style, even against teams in the bottom half of the table.

Milan have achieved big wins against direct rivals Roma, Napoli and Inter this season and picked up a draw away at Juventus.

The long list of Allegri’s critics included ex-Serie A defender Daniele Adani, with whom Allegri famously argued live on TV during his first spell at Juventus.

Adani, however, recently acknowledged Allegri’s impressive results at Milan so far and congratulated the Italian tactician following the Rossoneri’s 1-0 win over Inter in the derby della Madonnina.

Apparently, the only Allegri doubter left in Italy is ex-Italian striker Cassano, who won the Scudetto at Milan with Allegri in charge in 2010-11.

The ex-Milan and Roma star recently reiterated: “Remember what I said about Mourinho being finished and that sooner or later he would end up being forgotten. The same will happen to Allegri.

“I can’t imagine Milan in 2025 playing dreadful football because of their coach: Milan are history, beauty, aesthetics and quality. And what do they do? Everyone sits in front of the goalkeeper; there’s no depth, then you win the ball back, counter-attack and score.”

Naturally, more of Allegri’s critics will re-emerge once and if Milan’s results get worse, but surely the experienced Italian tactician is aware that balance will be needed to achieve his targets this season.

“We’ve got to take one step at a time, not get too fired up when things go well, because there will be difficult moments, and in those times we must not get dragged into depression,” Allegri said during the pre-season.

“It is more about mental balance than tactical, knowing that a season is like a cruise over 38 matches and you need to keep the same pace throughout.”
