Milan Misun arrived with great hype but left largely unnoticed

Back in late 2008, Gordon Strachan signed highly promising Czech youngster Milan Misun, and big thing were naturally expected from a player who was seen as quite the coup…

Strachan managed to persuade the young defender that his future lay in Glasgow, after fighting off competition from AC Milan and Copenhagen to sign the Czech youth international from FK Pribram in his native land.

Naturally a left back, 6ft 1in Misun could also adapt to a central defensive role, and was handed the number 15 shirt, and pitted straight into Gordon Strachan’s squad shortly after his arrival in early January 2009.

Misun didn’t see any first team action, and was mostly used in the reserves, during his maiden months at the club, but with Gordon Strachan leaving at the end of the 2008-09 campaign, he would have been eager to impress the incoming Tony Mowbray.

Unfortunately for Misun, he would suffer a cruciate injury just before the start of the new season, an injury that would prove to be devastating, as it put paid to his participation in that campaign as a whole.

After the dismissal of Tony Mowbray, Misun now fully fit and raring to go, was handed a fresh opportunity when he was selected to go on a pre season tour of North America by new boss Neil Lennon ahead of the 2010/11 campaign.

Despite trying his best the Czech youngster failed to force his way into Lennons first team plans and was allowed to leave on loan, with Dundee his destination.

Unfortunately for the player he made just two appearances for the Dark blues, and was on his way back to Celtic a month later. Although to be fair that wasn’t to do with his failure to impress, it was due to the Dens Park side falling into administration.

Misun would fail to make an impact on his return to Glasgow, and months later would cut his ties with the club permanently, without making a senior appearance as he signed for English third tier side Swindon Town.

Although it was soon revealed that he never officially signed a contract with the Robins, and instead moved back to his homeland with Viktoria Plzen, and again failed to make an impact before becoming something of a journeyman in the Czech footballing scene.

Misun now 36 is still playing in his native Czech Republic with second tier side Banik Sokolov, and made a decent career in the game, but ultimately was another in a long list of players who failed to live up to their early promise and hype.
