Mike Maignan was stellar in the Derby and has generally been more reliable both performance and injury-wise than last season, and Milan are ready to re-engage in the negotiation to extend his expiring contract, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The relationship between the parties has been icy since their last proper sit-down. The goalie’s camp didn’t like the previous offer, which was lowered after some blunders, the way the negotiation was conducted, and the fact that the hierarchy didn’t fulfill some promises. Only an act of persuasion by Massimiliano Allegri avoided his summer exit.
The Milan brass is more open to doing so now that Maignan has fully returned to form. However, the previous disagreements might not be solvable. The Rossoneri are willing to put €5M per year on the table for the next two or three seasons after previously proposing €4M.
The Frenchman has suitors in England, and Juventus have also reached out to his agents. According to Corriere della Sera, Inter could be in the mix as well. They are planning to move on from Yann Sommer at the end of the year, and his recent displays have only cemented the idea. The 30-year-old asked for €5.5M to re-up in previous months, which was scoffed at.
It wouldn’t be the first time the Nerazzurri poach a stalwart from their cross-town rivals in this fashion. It’d be an unforced error to lose him without putting up a fight, especially after he has bounced back and they onboarded older players last summer. If he keeps faring as he is, it’ll be a mistake not to retain him at any reasonable price.
