Recent rumors from England linked Jean-Philippe Mateta to Milan again, suggesting that the player feels ready for a new experience and that he’s unlikely to prolong his contract, which runs out in 2027.
According to Alfredo Pedullà, the striker was chased after by Atalanta last summer, which needed to replace Mateo Retegui. La Dea tried for a few weeks, but Crystal Palace didn’t budge. They asked for €50M plus add-ons near the time they conquered the Community Shield. It was pretty much a way to take him off the market. However, it didn’t lead to a new contract afterward. Surely, the teams that want him will have to empty their coffers.
Per Matteo Moretto (via Tribuna), Milan considered Mateta in the past window, too, but the talks didn’t have legs because of the Eagles’ requests. The Rossoneri are waiting in the wings to see whether he’ll be made available because of his unwillingness to re-up. However, it won’t be easy to haggle the price tag with his side.
The 28-year-old is having another productive campaign, as he has hit the net 7 times in 13 Premier League matches. He has found a home in London in 2022 after previously starring for Mainz and Olympique Lyonnais, tallying 55 goals and 13 helpers in 174 appearances.
He’d be an excellent compromise between purchasing a talented but unproven starlet and a veteran with the skill-set they are looking for. However, he’d be very pricey despite his contractual situation, and they have already splurged during the summer. Their ammo for January might hinge on whether they can sell Santiago Gimenez well or use him as a bargaining chip.
