Milan have been canvassing the market for a new defender throughout the January window, but the pieces of the puzzle haven’t fit in the right places for them to pull the trigger. They aren’t searching for a patch, but for a reliable contributor for years to come, Calciomercato reports.
Massimiliano Allegri has Federico Gatti at the top of his shortlist, but the talks with Juventus never progressed much. The Rossoneri didn’t like the swaps suggested by some intermediaries. At the same time, they are unwilling to spend €25/30M and the center-back isn’t necessarily eager to leave Turin.
Milan have even offered Chelsea’s Axel Disasi and Union Berlin’s Diogo Leite, but their officials are only lukewarm on them. They’ll decide later on whether to seize an opportunity or instead stand pat.
Director Igli Tare would rather bring in one of his preferred targets: Joe Gomez, Tiago Gabriel, or Mario Gila. There’s only a small opening regarding the first one, while Lecce and Lazio don’t want to discuss their stars’ midseason exits.
The Rossoneri recently faced and met with the Salentini, but it’d take a major offer to convince them. They also talked about Francesco Camarda, who’s set for shoulder surgery, but it appears that he’ll stay where he is for the rehab.
The need was more urgent at the beginning of January, given the dense schedule, but they survived it relatively unscathed, as Koni De Winter has improved thanks to the uptick in minutes. They’ll be less busy from here on out, and it’ll be easier to switch to a four-man line when they want to. They are correct in only wanting a stud, but they come at a premium in January.
