Chelsea captain Millie Bright is expecting a feisty affair on Wednesday night as her team locks horns with Manchester City in the League Cup semi final.
The Blues are looking to retain their title in the competition after beating City in last year’s final.
Chelsea have struggled this year by their standards and they will be eager to get one over Manchester City this week.
The Blues have played City once this season, winning on the opening day of the WSL as order looked to be resumed.
However Sonia Bompastor’s team have dropped points in four games since then and the title may be out of reach. City have capitalised on their rivals’ mistakes and they now hold a commanding lead atop the WSL.
The Cityzens have won every game this season since losing to Chelsea in September and Millie Bright knows just how good the league leaders are right now.
“There’s no doubt at all that they’re one of the teams that are in the best form right now,” said the captain. “They’re sitting at the top of the league for a reason – six points clear – and they’re in the cup semi-final for a reason as well.
“They are definitely a tough team to face, and they’re in really good rhythm at the moment. They have confidence, scoring in many different ways, and similar to us, I think they’ve really found their rhythm. It’s two top teams coming up against each other, and it’s going to be a feisty one!”
Bright, who was on the new years honours list in 2026, has been excellent since returning from the winter break.
The 32-year-old scored against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup last weekend as Chelsea continued their good run of form.
Chelsea have won five of the last six meetings against City, but Wednesday’s game could be their toughest clash to date.
Winning this week’s semi final isn’t just important in terms of the League Cup.
The team that advances to the final will also gain an important edge over their opposition in the WSL.
Manchester City are currently six points ahead of Chelsea in the league and the title is theirs to lose at this point.
Should they gain the momentum from Wednesday’s game, City could run away with the league this season.
City and Chelsea meet again in just two weeks for their second WSL clash of the campaign.
The winner of the League Cup semi final will face either Manchester United or Arsenal in the final.
