England veterans made themselves unavailable for selection in the build-up to Euro 2025
Mary Earps and Millie Bright paid tribute to the Lionesses after England defended their continental crown with victory in the Euro 2025 final.
Three years on from lifting the trophy at Wembley, Sarina Wiegman’s side beat Spain on penalties to go back-to-back and become the first senior England squad to win a major tournament away from home.
After it finished 1-1 at the end of extra-time in Basel, both sides had two penalties saved in the shootout. Salma Paralluelo then dragged her spot-kick wide, setting the stage for Chloe Kelly to find the top corner and spark wild celebrations.
Earps and Bright were both part of the victorious Euro 2022 squad, while Bright was captain a year later as the Lionesses reached the World Cup final and were beaten by Spain.
However, Earps retired earlier from international duty earlier this tournament, just five weeks out from the tournament. That came after she had lost her place to Hannah Hampton and Wiegman said she was “disappointed” with the decision.
Bright, meanwhile, made herself unavailable for selection, stating that she was unable to "give 100% mentally or physically”.
She has instead featured on a podcast throughout the tournament with former team-mate Rachel Daly and the pair gave their reaction soon after the final-whistle.
The defender urged the Lionesses to soak in what they had achieved and said she would “do anything” to be a part of the celebrations.
“I just want them all to embrace the moment,” Bright told the Daly Brightness podcast.
“Do not let this day or this night or tomorrow... because I imagine when they come back to England they’ll do a big ceremony again, maybe back to Trafalgar Square.
“If you need us to perform again, let us know. I might be there on stage again, I might have my shades on.
“Trust me if you want us to perform again, we’ll come and do the performance. No problem.
“But just embrace it. It can go by you so quickly - click of your fingers it can be gone.”
She added: “Honestly, I’d do anything to be in that changing room right now.”
In Earps’ absence, Hampton shone throughout the tournament, playing a key role in shootout wins over Sweden and Spain.
Sharing an Instagram post celebrating England’s win, Earps captioned it: “Wow wow wow incredible.”
