Kyle Joseph is reportedly of interest to the Lions ahead of the new season

After an extremely promising 2025/26 Championship season, Millwall will hope to have successfully licked their wounds after suffering disappointment on two counts within the campaign's final weeks.

The Lions have resided outside English football's top-flight since 1990, having only spent two season's within the elite in club history in the two prior campaigns.

For so long the South London outfit, following their promotion from League One nine years ago, had been described as the Championship's 'nearly' team, having competed valiantly for a spot in the top six before ultimately falling short.

However, that would soon change in 2025/26, which was Alex Neil's first full season in SE16 after initially taking over in December 2024 following the end of Harris' second spell in charge.

The Scot is one of the most experienced managers in the second tier these days, having achieved play-off success with Norwich City 11 years ago, before continuing to hone his craft with the likes of Preston North End and Stoke City.

Unsurprisingly though, Neil faces the challenge of now trying to maintain Millwall's standards in the promotion race after losing out on automatic promotion at the expense of Ipswich Town, before losing 2-0 on aggregate to Hull City in the play-off semi-finals, with the sixth-placed Tigers eventually winning the post-season lottery under Sergej Jakirovic.

And, with the summer transfer window now open for business, Neil reportedly has one eye on current developments at the MKM Stadium.

That's because, according to the Daily Mail, Millwall have readied a £5m transfer offer to the Tigers for the services of their Scottish forward, Kyle Joseph.

It has been well-documented that City's third play-off success at Championship level had been achieved against a backdrop of a two-window transfer fee restriction, with Joseph actually one of the last players the club were able to spend a fee on in January 2025.

Indeed, after Football League World exclusively revealed Hull's interest in the then-Blackpool forward, it emerged that the club had parted with £2.5m to secure his services from the League One side, where he enjoyed plenty of success in front of goal.

Joseph's initial move to HU3 under Ruben Selles saw him fail to net, before eventually breaking his duck in a 3-1 win over Southampton last September and going on to score seven more times.

He played in 49 of Hull's matches across all competitions last term, but missed out on the chance of featuring at Wembley after requiring surgery on an ankle issue which was caused by a strong tackle from Millwall's Thierno Ballo at The Den last month, before Mohamed Belloumi entered the fray in his place, with the Algerian changing the course of the semi-final.

If Millwall were to part with £5m for his signature, it would equal their club-record which was smashed last summer by Josh Coburn's arrival, as well as help Hull's current financial situation, as they must generate approximately £6m to avoid falling foul of the EFL's PSR regulations.

Despite being raised in Southport, Joseph is of London origins, and after netting two of his eight goals last term in a 3-1 win at The Den on December 13th, revealed that his father wouldn't be best pleased due to his affiliations to the Lions.

"My dad supports Millwall...probably won't get a phone call," he joked at the time, before his second encounter in South London of the season was obviously bittersweet.

Tigers fans would no doubt wish the 24-year-old well after his tireless contributions, which were emphasised by a remarkable goal-line clearance against Charlton Athletic on April 25th, which proved crucial as Jakirovic's team secured a play-off spot the following week.

Meanwhile, Joseph's versatility could also be of huge benefit to Millwall, especially with star winger, Femi Azeez, attracting interest of his own.
