Aidomo Emakhu has failed to register a single goal contribution in 13 Championship appearances so far.

Millwall manager Alex Neil must be considering moving on winger Aidomo Emakhu in the January transfer window if they want to secure a play-off place come the end of the season.

The 22-year-old has failed to register a single goal contribution in 13 Championship appearances so far, including six starts.

In fact, since his move from Shamrock Rovers in 2023, Emakhu has only scored once in 67 games across all competitions - which came in August of that year away at Norwich City.

As per Capology estimates, the Irishman earns £6.5k-per-week at The Den, more than some of the club's other wingers, Ra'ees Bangura-Williams and Thierno Ballo.

Given that Southwark News reported the Lions had rejected two bids for Emakhu from Wycombe Wanderers in the summer, a move away in winter might be best for all involved.

Aidomo Emakhu hasn't lived up to the Shamrock Rovers hype at Millwall

The promise was certainly there when Millwall moved to sign the then-19-year-old Emakhu two years ago. Whilst at Shamrock Rovers - where he featured 45 times for the first-team - Emakhu scored in three different European competitions.

Yet since making his debut in a 1-1 draw with Burnley two years ago, Emakhu has flatly failed to replicate that European spark in a consistent manner, and has seemingly shown more impact as a substitute.

At the time of the apparent Wycombe interest, FLW's Lions Fan Pundit, Lucas Ball, suggested that the winger should be given until January and then potentially offloaded if he fails to make "things happen". Seen as though Emakhu's contract expires next summer, the coming months might be the only chance the club have of cashing in - that is, of course, if he doesn't sign an extension.

What is perhaps slightly concerning is that Millwall have scored the least number of goals out of any team in the top six, with 17, and Emakhu has only registered two shots on target.

Yes, he’s not started every game, but fans are probably itching for Femi Azeez to get back from injury and replace Emakhu on the right.

Millwall haven’t finished inside the Championship play-off places since their promotion from League One in 16/17, and Azeez’s five goal contributions in eight games was a big reason as to why they got there earlier on in the season.

Alex Neil can't afford Aidomo Emakhu to keep misfiring for Millwall

Neil toldNewsAtDenthat "Aido's our player", amid the Wycombe news, and predicted "he's going to be really important for us this year, and that remains the case". But so far, that's not really been the case at all - and even Neil might've expected a better output from him, seeing as though Emakhu is in his third full season with the club.

Winless in their last three, the London outfit's incredible October form - where they won four out of five - looks to have dried up entirely.

Emakhu played 74 minutes in the loss against Coventry City but only played six minutes in the remaining fixtures of that month, which means he didn't exactly contribute to any of those wins.

Since featuring a bit more regularly in November, the Lions haven't won a game. Given these circumstances, it might soon become increasingly difficult for Neil to justify Emakhu’s selection. There are also four teams that are two points behind Neil's side, so they need to get back to winning ways as soon as possible to stay up there.

According to FotMob data, the Ireland youth international creates an average of 1.83 chances per 90 minutes, a respectable figure on paper, yet he's got nothing to show for it and the best in his position do. For comparison, Stoke City’s Sorba Thomas and West Brom’s Mikey Johnston are the wingers with the most assists in the league so far - with four each - and they create an average of 2.23 and 2.22 chances per 90 respectively. Emakhu's not miles away from either of these figures, so you could expect him to start picking up actual assists soon.

Ultimately, though, the January transfer window will surely present an ideal opportunity for the club to look at the winger’s situation again, especially if things change in terms of game-time once Azeez is back. As mentioned earlier, the former Reading man enjoyed great success on the right-hand side before his injury.

With Emakhu's contract winding down, it might be time to redirect those estimated £6.5k wages toward players better suited to the club’s play-off hopes. Who knows, the Chairboys could come back for round three and Neil might have a different view.
