Minnesota United finally announced their move into the transfer market with the signing of Hoyeon Jung, a South Korean midfielder who shone a light in K League 1 with Gwangju FC. At an age of 24 years, Jung has penned a three-year contract with an option to extend until 2028 and consequently enters MLS surrounded by high expectations.
Jung arrives with quite the résumé. During his time with Gwangau FC, he racked up a total of 113 appearances, scored three goals, and made 14 assists across all competitions. His meteoric rise to prominence led him to be awarded the K League Young Player of the Year in 2023. He played in big part in South Korea's U-23 team during the Asian Games 2023 win and even got called up for the senior national team.
Minnesota United surely needs replacement in midfield, and by signing Jung, the strategy is clear-cut: versatility and creativity into the squad. He also comes ready to fight for a place against the experienced ones and could bring dynamics into the middle of the pitch.
Club director of soccer Khaled El-Ahmad spotlighted Jung's versatility: "Hoyeon is a dynamic, versatile midfielder that adds more competition and options to our midfield." That versatility will be huge as Eric Ramsay looks to raise the bar of the team in the 2025 season.
Adapting is a crucial factor for any player moving to a new continent. Jung seems well aware of that challenge. In his first statements after signing with the club, he expressed confidence and commitment: “I’m excited about this new challenge and grateful for the opportunity to grow with the team. I’ll do my best to contribute and develop as a player in this new environment.”
Having another player from South Korea, forward Jeong Sang-Bin, in the Minnesota lineup already may be a big plus toward Jung's adaptation. His fellow countryman in the squad may help him settle in and overcome initial difficulties.
