Kaoru Mitoma’s spectacular volley and Georginio Rutter’s stoppage-time strike earned Brighton a 2-2 draw at Tottenham.

Albion trailed 1-0 in first-half added time when Mitoma met Pascal Gross’s curling cross with a first-time right-foot finish of rare quality, evoking Marco van Basten in 1988. According to WeAreBrighton.com, Mitoma topped the player ratings with 7.91, with Rutter second on 7.45.

Spurs restored their lead after the interval when Jan Paul van Hecke was dispossessed as last man trying to play out. Pushed up front late on, the defender then set up Rutter to level in the 95th minute.

Tottenham are now 15 Premier League matches without a win dating back to December, still marooned in the relegation zone, and Roberto De Zerbi awaits his first three points as Spurs boss. He was warmly received by the away end at full time.

Bart Verbruggen produced a sharp second-half stop from Joao Palhinha after earlier involvement in the opener. Olivier Boscagli was assured and the only defender to score a seven, prompting questions over Lewis Dunk walking straight back in after suspension.

Diego Gomez departed in tears with a knee problem after 20 minutes, a worrying sign for Brighton and potentially Paraguay before the World Cup. Mitoma later went off with 15 minutes left and the Albion will hope it is not serious. Otherwise Fabian Hurzeler will be facing a potential selection crisis out wide for Chelsea on Tuesday, with Gomez certain to be missing. Yankuba Minteh sparked much of Brighton’s threat and began the move for the equaliser, while Charalampos Kostoulas’s movement also helped.
