Philadelphia Union captain Alejandro Bedoya called out the US Congress after scoring in his side’s 5-1 victory over DC United on Sunday.

This weekend, mass shootings in both Ohio and Texas left at least 30 people dead and injured and there have now been 31 similar incidents in America in 2019 alone.

Earlier in the day, USMNT international Bedoya took to Twitter to express his frustration at the latest tragedies.

“Seeing more thoughts and prayers bullshit,” he wrote.

“Words without actions are just worthless. America, it seems, is becoming a dystopian society.”

And when asked by another Twitter user how he would address the problem, the midfielder added: “We can start with stricter background checks, red flag laws, making a registry for gun purchases, closing gun show loopholes, and taxing ammunition.”

The 29-year-old then netted the opening goal in his side’s thumping win at Audi Field and celebrated by grabbing the pitch-side and shouting: “Hey Congress, do something now. End gun violence. Let’s go!”

Major League Soccer released an official statement on Monday in which they confirmed Bedoya would not face punishment for his political celebration.

“The Major League Soccer family joins everyone in grieving for the loss of lives in Texas and Ohio, and we understand that our players and staff have strong and passionate views on this issue,” read the statement.
