Luka Modric has thanked his supporters and has admitted that Milan’s season ‘didn’t end as we wanted’ as the former Ballon d’Or winner weighs up his next steps after missing out on Champions League qualification on the final day of the 2025-26 season.
“A season with beautiful moments and difficult moments, but at the end we have to face the harsh reality and admit that it didn’t end as we wanted,” Modric admitted in a recent post on Instagram.
“I’d like to thank from the bottom of my heart all the Milan supporters for the love, respect and amazing support they’ve shown me during the whole season. Forza Milan.”

Modric was a revelation in Serie A at the age of 40, but amidst uncertainty across the board in San Siro, there is a growing possibility that the ex-Real Madrid star bids farewell after just one season.
He signed a one-year contract with Milan last summer, which included an option to extend by a further 12 months. But, with no Champions League football in 2026-27 and currently with no head coach, sporting director, technical director nor CEO in place, and with plenty of offers and potential coaching roles available elsewhere, it looks like an uphill battle for the Rossoneri to keep hold of the six-time Champions League winner.
Modric has not definitively confirmed either way whether he will continue playing in 2026-27.
Saturday’s reports indicate that there will be an offer of a coaching or directorial role at his former club Real Madrid in the event that Modric decides to retire this summer.
