The fan was surrounded by England supporters on Regent Street St James’s next to Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night.

Footage shared on social media shows Metropolitan Police officers bundling a man wearing an Argentina shirt into a police van.

The man was jeered by onlookers as officers brought him to the vehicle.

Police were eventually able to clear a path for the van to drive away.

The Metropolitan Police often separate football fans from different teams as a precaution and no further incident was reported. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by the fan or those pictured.

England were beaten 2-1 in their semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday night.

Anthony Gordon put the Three Lions 1-0 up in the second half, giving his team hope of reaching a first World Cup final since 1966.

But it was not to be after Argentina equalised through Enzo Fernandez in the 95th minute before Lauturo Martinez gave them the lead in the third minute of injury time.

Argentina will now face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday.

Spain had already booked their place in the final after beating France 2-0 on Tuesday.
