Nice-Matin reports that Monaco have begun contract talks with Cruz Azul midfielder Erik Lira, 26.

No agreement is in place, and Monaco first need to finalise Folarin Balogun’s departure, 25. The striker is in talks with three clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, and his exit must be resolved before Monaco can move forward on Lira.

Lira featured for Mexico at the World Cup, playing in four matches. He is seen as a key target after Aladji Bamba, 20, joined Newcastle United, with Lamine Camara, 22, also potentially leaving amid interest from across the Channel.

A UNAM Pumas academy product, Lira moved to Cruz Azul four and a half years ago and quickly became a mainstay for the Mexico City club.

He made 45 appearances last season, including 41 starts, scoring one goal, and ended the campaign by adding two more titles to his honours list.
