According to L’Equipe, AS Monaco are pushing to sign Freiburg left-back Jordy Makengo, 25, with an agreement in principle for him to join Filipe Luis's side.
Makengo is contracted to Freiburg until 2028, so any move depends on a deal between the clubs. The report adds Monaco are short of funds, which is slowing their transfer activity.
Monaco are in the market for a left-back after parting with Caio Henrique and Kassoum Ouattara this summer. The pair moved to AFC Ajax and Besiktas respectively.
Should Monaco strike terms with Freiburg, Makengo would compete for a starting role with Brazilian full-back Nazinho.
Luis's team begin their Ligue 1 campaign on Sunday with a trip to Didier Digard's Le Havre.
