Monaco defender Mohammed Salisu has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, ruling him out for the rest of the season, the club said in a statement.

The Ghana international, 26, sustained the injury in a final challenge in the dying seconds of Saturday's 1-3 defeat to Lyon. He stayed on and showed little immediate concern.

The pain worsened on Sunday and scans on Monday confirmed the ACL rupture. He is expected to undergo surgery shortly.

Salisu has been a mainstay of Monaco's defence since Sébastien Pocognoli took charge in October, replacing Adi Hütter.

His involvement at the next World Cup, for which Ghana have qualified, now looks very unlikely. Following Japan international Takumi Minamino's injury on 21 December at Auxerre in the Coupe de France, Salisu is the second Monaco player to suffer the same injury in three weeks.
