Milan director Geoffrey Moncada admits the season has been a failure and keeps future options open for Sergio Conceicao, but insists he ‘hadn’t heard the rumour’ about Lee Congerton.

The game with Roma kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT, 20.45 CET).

The Rossoneri already played in this stadium on Wednesday evening, suffering a painful 1-0 defeat to Bologna in the Coppa Italia Final, which promoted director Giorgio Furlani to declare this season was “a failure.”

That was also their best chance of qualifying for Europe, so this becomes a must-win game just to fight for the Conference League spot.

“I agree with Furlani, we are very disappointed with the season, but it gives us even more hunger to work next year. We had some ups and downs, saw many games in Europe and Serie A where we did well, but we are really disappointed above all for the fans,” Moncada told DAZN.

Now that they know the situation and lost the Coppa Italia Final, can Milan confirm Sergio Conceicao will no longer be the coach next season?

“We have faith in Sergio, he did everything for us. It was not easy to come in January and naturally at the end of the season we will evaluate everything, but he is a really good coach,” replied Moncada.

The Coppa Italia was not the only disastrous situation for Milan this week, as the youth team project lost the Serie C relegation play-out to SPAL and will be in Serie D next term.

“We set up Milan Futuro to create players. Playing in Serie C or D is not important, the thing that counts is to create talent, and we saw seven players come through from the academy into the senior squad, more than at any previous year.”

There were reports today that former Atalanta and Sunderland director Lee Congerton was the latest candidate to be the director of sport at Milan, but Moncada seemed bemused.

“I haven’t heard that rumour, to be honest. I cannot say anything about that.”
