According to a report from L’Équipe, Montpellier HSC are considering making a move for Olympique de Marseille’s Chancel Mbemba (30). Despite the defender’s return to first-team training at OM, the club’s stance has not changed and a departure is still envisaged.
With the club bottom of Ligue 1, Montpellier sacked Michel Der Zakarian following Sunday’s 5-1 defeat to Marseille. Jean-Louis Gasset, who spent the second half of last season in interim charge at Les Phocéens, took Der Zakarian’s place. He will remain MHSC manager until the end of the season.
L’Équipe understands that Gasset is interested in a reunion with two of his former players. La Paillade’s leaky defence has been decimated by injuries and Mbemba may therefore become a target come January, as could Bamo Meïté (22), who has been relegated to a backup option under Roberto De Zerbi.
However, pulling off a deal with OM, with whom Gasset retains a strong relationship, may be difficult, given Montpellier’s financial difficulties.
