Montpellier HSC’s deal with Olympique de Marseille for midfielder Soumaïla Traoré (20) has fallen through, according to Foot Mercato.

Montpellier had been set to complete the signing of Traoré on a loan deal with an option to buy. However, Foot Mercato reports that he will now return to his previous loan club, FC Versailles, under similar terms – a loan with an option to buy.

Traoré began his career at Djoliba AC in his native Mali. He joined Marseille in August 2022 and has since progressed through the club’s academy, though he is yet to make a senior appearance.

Traoré was loaned out to Versailles for the second half of the 2024-25 season. In his first taste of senior football, Traoré appeared 13 times for the Championnat National side. If the move to Versailles is completed, it would mark a return to the French third tier rather than a step up to Ligue 2 with Montpellier, who were relegated from Ligue 1 last season.
