Alvaro Morata cannot wait to play in the derby against Inter after the international break, admitting that he came to San Siro to watch a couple as a spectator.

A video on Morata’s Instagram story yesterday showed that the striker has returned to training at Milanello, with the aim of being available for the match in eight days against Venezia in Serie A, and then being at 100% for his first Derby della Madonnina.

In his career Morata has taken a shine to derby games. In the four derbies played against Real Madrid in 2023-24 for Atletico Madrid he scored three goals, winning two and drawing another. He has six goals against Los Blancos in total.

In Italy, he has three favourite victims, against whom he has scored four goals: Bologna, Parma and Inter. Today, Milan fans hope he can become the talisman capable of breaking the derby curse after six defeats in a row.

Morata gave an interview to Sky in which he spoke mostly about the upcoming game against Inter on Sunday 22 September at 20:45 CEST, which follows the Venezia and Liverpool matches at San Siro.

“I can’t wait to play the derby. Now I can say it for the first time: I came to San Siro to watch a couple of derbies as a spectator, with my cap and dark glasses, no one noticed me,” he said.

“I wanted to breathe in that atmosphere, even from the outside you realise how much this match is worth, I can’t wait to try the experience of scoring in a derby and winning it, to make the Milan fans feel proud.

“Inter are very competitive, they have a great team, you have to play with your heart. You can also make a mistake in a pass or a chance, but you have to give everything on the pitch.

“You have to be hungry in a derby, you can’t make a mistake. You can lose a match, but if you’ve given everything there are no regrets.”

Morata was asked about what it feels like to be one of the most experienced members of the Milan squad both in terms of age (31), the games that he has played in and the trophies he has one.

“Gray hair shows when a player has some experience (smiles). I have learned from many coaches, I have learned from many teammates,” he added.

“I think I still have the 4-5 most important years of my career, I feel ready to give everything with a very high level of experience, this is good for me.”
