Police intervention overshadowed the German Cup tie between Waldhof Mannheim of the third Bundesliga and FC Kaiserslautern of the second. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, more than 85 people were injured, including 35 officers.

The trouble began after 90 goalless minutes when some supporters entered the field. Tension had built throughout, with flares repeatedly launched from the stands.

Police moved into the stadium on foot and on horseback. In the Kaiserslautern away section, a flare sparked a small fire that firefighters extinguished.

Following the intervention, extra time kicked off roughly 20 minutes late and the game concluded with a 0-1 win for Kaiserslautern.

The fixture is a long-standing regional rivalry and had been designated high risk.
