The crisis at Morecambe FC continues to grow with the club now suspended from the National League until mid-August.
"Discussions regarding the Club's ability to meet its financial obligations for the 2025/2026 season have again taken place," a statement from the governing body said.
"It was decided further sanctions must be imposed, with the Club’s membership to be suspended with immediate effect.
"The Club will also remain under embargo ahead of the new season.
"Morecambe Football Club will also be removed from the National League Cup for the forthcoming season.
"The Committee will meet again on Wednesday August 20 to determine if outstanding items have been satisfied, and to decide the Club’s ability to retain Membership in the Competition."
The Shrimps' suspension means that opening games against Boston United, Brackley Town, and Scunthorpe United are all likely to be called off. The situation mirrors Bury FC's eventual expulsion from the EFL back in 2019.
The National League had previously met with owner Jason Whittingham to seek assurances that the club would be able to compete in the 2025/26 season. Terms had been outlined to the owner ahead of a deadline of 12pm earlier today.
That deadline has now passed which sees the club suspended and should the situation in Lancashire not improve then the club will likely be kicked out of the competition putting its future into major doubt.
To make matters worse for the Shrimps, previous potential buyers Panjab Warriors, a sports investment firm, appear to have stepped back from plans to purchase the beleaguered club. Morecambe's owners have recently insisted that they are still in talks with a consortium led by Jonny Cato.
