This pair could still be leaving Home Park before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month

We are now less than a week away from the end of the summer transfer window, and there is still plenty of business left to be done up and down the country.

The final gaps still need to be filled, and that extra bit of quality needs to be sprinkled on top of the squad before August comes to an end, with plenty of players still likely to switch clubs before the Friday to come.

Plymouth Argyle will be no different in that regard, with Wayne Rooney still looking to bring in some reinforcements to assist his Pilgrims side in the Championship, while also getting rid of some of the deadwood on the fringes of the squad at Home Park.

The former Birmingham City boss has already gone on record to say his squad is too big as it stands, so here we look at a couple of players who could be leaving Devon before the window comes to a close in the next few days.

Morgan Whittaker

Interest in Morgan Whittaker has seemed to have cooled recently, after Rangers were said to have had two bids rejected for the forward earlier in the summer.

That doesn’t mean that the former Swansea City man’s future has been decided though, with a number of clubs said to have been interested in his services during the off-season.

While Rangers have been unsuccessful in trying to lure the 19-goal forward to Glasgow so far, the likes of Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers were also sniffing around last month, and could be tempted by a late swoop in the coming days.

Celta Vigo, Stuttgart and Lazio were all also linked with the 23-year-old, although with Argyle said to be holding out for £10 million for their prized asset this summer, he won’t be leaving on the cheap.

As has always been the case, the Pilgrims will be doing all they can to keep hold of him before the transfer window shuts, and with limited time left to replace him if he does go the Devonians need to play hardball once again to make sure he is theirs for the season ahead.

Callum Wright

Recent rumours have linked Argyle midfielder Callum Wright with League One side Lincoln City, with the former Cheltenham Town man failing to nail down a first-team spot during his time in Devon.

Having joined the club in the January of 2023, Wright contributed towards eight goals to help the Pilgrims secure promotion from the third tier, but has since found himself on the fringes of the squad after the step up to the Championship.

Right now, the Greens need players who are going to be pushing for regular starts agains the finest talents that the Football League has to offer, and the 24-year-old doesn’t seem to be up to the task.

With that in mind, Rooney should be looking to offload the playmaker in the coming days, which could pave the way for another incoming before the window shuts, with the club crying out for a quality star who can link midfield and attack.

A stint back in League One would be perfect for Wright, who can be a top performer on his day, and Lincoln could give him the perfect platform to play regularly and regain some confidence on the pitch.
