The Pilgrims will be bracing themselves for more interest in the 23-year-old when January comes
Plymouth Argyle will likely be bracing themselves for a lot more interest in Morgan Whittaker in the January transfer window, given the speculation surrounding the 23-year-old over the past 12 months.
While the likes of Fulham, Brentford, and Lazio were said to have an interest in the left-footed ace at the start of the year, Burnley and Rangers stepped up efforts to try and make him theirs over the course of the summer.
Argyle were resolute in keeping the player at Home Park for the foreseeable future though, with numerous bids rejected during the off-season, as they kept a firm grasp on a player who netted 19 Championship goals over the course of the 23/24 campaign.
With six weeks until the new year begins, there is sure to be plenty more conjecture arising in the former Swansea City man before too long, so here is everything you need to know about his current situation with the Pilgrims.
As previously mentioned, Whittaker was said to be the subject of Premier League and continental interest during January of this year, with Football Insider reporting as much, with the Greens said to be holding out for £15 million at the time.
Having started the previous campaign on fire with 16 goals in all competitions before the end of January, it was no wonder that there was sufficient interest in Argyle’s club-record signing, who had joined for £1 million that previous summer.
The Pilgrims remained firm on their not-for-sale stance though, with the forward playing his part in keeping his side in the second tier before the rumour mill kicked back into full gear in the summer.
Burnley and Rangers both had bids knocked back before the summer transfer window came to a close, with the player himself stating that the ability to play week in, week out at Home Park was a driving factor in keeping him at the club.
Despite finding the back of the net on a less frequent basis this season, Whittaker has still played his part with match-defining goals against Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers to earn his side valuable points in the battle at the bottom.
As a result, Argyle are unlikely to be letting their star man leave without being well reimbursed as a result, with the latest valuation from the summer said to be £10 million, which any interested party was unwilling to match.
Argyle hold all the cards in terms of negotiations regarding Whittaker, with the Devon outfit tying him down to a four-year contract when he joined the club on a permanent basis in the summer of 2023.
That means he still has two and a half years left on his current deal at the Theatre of Greens and will hold his value for the time being, with the Pilgrims having the foresight to make the long-term investment a year and a half ago.
The star has been consistent in his commitment to the club in the past, and the lure of filling his pockets doesn’t seem to be a priority of his at this moment in time, which is a refreshing outlook to have in the modern-day where players are off like a flash at the thought of earning a few extra quid.
According to estimates from Capology, the attacker is currently earning £7,500 per week at Home Park, which is half of reported top earners Adam Forshaw and Bali Mumba, and less than the likes of Joe Edwards, Mustapha Bundu, and Victor Palsson.
Whether the start of 2025 is the time when both player and club decide a change is needed remains to be seen, but if he does move on, Whittaker will be wished well by the Green Army, after giving them plenty of fond memories during his time associated with the club.
