Morocco were handed a 3-0 win over Senegal by CAF’s appeals body, overturning the last CAN final, and punters are asking what happens to settled bets. Rules generally prioritise the first declared result.
According to L'Équipe, some licensed sites moved quickly for commercial reasons, without waiting for any CAS outcome, after the final in Rabat on 18 January.
Betclic acted overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, going beyond the regulatory framework to pay all bets on a Morocco victory, while also keeping Senegal payouts already settled.
Unibet and Parions Sport en Ligne followed on Wednesday on an exceptional basis. Punters who backed Morocco in retail outlets but discarded their tickets after the match have no recourse.
French rules set out by the Autorité nationale des jeux state that bets become final once the organiser first announces results, even if those results are later changed. This is Article 40 of the 4 November 2020 decree.
The ANJ received around 30 mediation requests after CAF’s announcement. Stakes on the tournament reached a record 177 M€ in France, up 100 M€ on CAN 2023.
The Morocco Senegal final drew 7.8 M€ in bets, second to the Morocco Nigeria semi-final on 14 January, which finished 0-0 before 4-2 on penalties and attracted 8.3 M€.
