James Morrison says Mikey Johnston will probably return from injury with a point to prove after a frustrating layoff.

The winger broke his ankle at the end of February in Morrison’s first game as caretaker, and has played only a brief cameo since. He rebuilt fitness in pre-season, featured in friendlies, and came off the bench in the EFL Cup opener at Rotherham.

"He's been at this club for a number of years and he's an important player. From my point of view it's the games where we could've had him really. I think he'd have been perfect for coming on against Charlton and QPR."

He told ExpressAndStar.com.

Morrison said Johnston then suffered an ankle setback and is sidelined for the foreseeable future. Albion were held by Charlton earlier in the month as the visitors equalised with their only attack, and QPR also took a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns.

Johnston, 27, was among the Championship’s top goal creators last season before his serious injury. Morrison had explored using the former Celtic man centrally in a support striker role rather than out wide.

"Yes, I think he'll agree with that (he can return to his best)," Morrison added. "He'll probably come back with a point to prove. That's what I like, players with points to prove."
